Rahhab Shaleem Farm and Hallaniyat Islands contribute to enhancing food security in Oman

The Rahhab Farm in the Wilayat of Shaleem and the Hallaniyat Islands, part of the Dhofar Governorate and operated by the Oman Nakheel Development Company, stands as a pioneering project in Oman. This initiative significantly bolsters food security, economic growth, social development, and environmental sustainability.

The farm aims to revolutionise the palm sector by integrating cutting-edge technologies and scientific advancements in agriculture. This approach enhances the productivity and competitive edge of Omani dates in international markets.

Engineer Shabib bin Ali al Mahrouqi, a Senior Specialist in Agricultural Support Services at Nakheel Oman Development Company, informed that the farm hosts 40,000 date palm trees of the “Al Fard” and “Khalas” varieties. Spanning a total area of 6 square kilometres, it is located 25 kilometres from Marmul Airport, with a cultivated area covering 256 hectares.

Highlighting the carbon neutrality initiative, Al Mahrouqi emphasised the importance of planting 30,000 lemon trees over 96 hectares at Rahhab Farm. This project, carried out in 2023 in collaboration with Petroleum Development Oman Company and the Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries, and Water Resources, aims to boost Oman’s lemon productivity by 38 per cent.

The farm employs modern irrigation techniques, utilising groundwater as the primary water source. These techniques are linked to sensors that ensure optimal water usage, enhancing productivity and efficiency.

Oman is dedicated to nurturing its palm trees by establishing modern farms dedicated to date cultivation across various governorates. This effort aims to enhance agricultural, economic, environmental, and food security, while also capitalizing on promising investment opportunities in this vital sector.
