OFM purchases 10,000 metric tonnes of Omani wheat crop

Oman Flour Mills Company (OFM) received a batch of Omani wheat crops, which cultivated in the year 2024.

The total quantity of Omani wheat crops, that will be purchased by OFM during this year, will reach to 10,000 metric tonnes , increasing by 100% , compared to 2023.

This deal comes within the framework of OFM’s plans to strengthen the food security system and encourage farmers to grow wheat. The company annually purchases Omani wheat from farmers as part of its plans to develop the cultivation of local wheat crops, such as the Omani bur, and promote it in domestic and regional markets.

OFM supports local farmers by purchasing varieties of Omani wheat through the wheat purchase subsidy programme, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, which aims to expand the cultivation of the local wheat crop and develop Omani wheat products (the Omani bur), and various other products.

On this occasion, Haitham bin Mohammed al Fannah, CEO of OFM, said: “OFM annually purchases wheat crops from farmers, seeking to develop its production and providing it as an Omani local product in the local and regional markets”.

He added: “This year’s purchased quantity is considered the highest, reaching10,000 metric tonnes, recording an increase by 100%, compared to last year. The number of farmers from whom the crop will be purchased in this year, will exceed 95 farmers, compared to 65 in 2023, up by 45%”.

He pointed out that this effort reflects the company’s contributions to promote wheat cultivation in the Sultanate of Oman as part of its strategy to strengthen the food security system. The increase in quantity of wheat this year also affirms that Omani wheat is accepted by consumers in the local and regional markets because of its high quality.

OFM’s initiative aims to be part of a system to support the purchase of wheat crops in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, in order to expand the cultivation of wheat as it is one of the most important strategic crops.
