Heavy thunderstorms expected next 12 hours:Met

Heavy rains are expected in the next 12 hours in the northern governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.

The weather forecaster at Oman Met Office said there are three waves embedded in the same system and we are now approaching the third wave.

“We have heavy thunderstorms expected tonight and on early morning on Wednesday. The rest of the day on Wednesday there would be just some advection and cloud formation over Al Hajar Mountains in addition to some isolated rain,” the weather forecaster said speaking to Observer.

According to him, the places that are expected to receive highest amount of rainfall are Musandam, North Al Batinah, Al Dhahira, South Al Batinah and Al Hajar Mountains.

Heavy thunderstorms will also be accompanied by active downward winds, and hailstones expected during the late night and on Wednesday mornings, with rain amounts ranging between 30-100 mm in the governorates of Musandam, Al Buraimi, Al Dhahira, North Al Batinah, Al Dakhiliyah, South Al Batinah, Muscat, North Al Sharqiyah, South Al Sharqiyah, and northern Al Wusta Governorate. Scattered rain that may be thundery at times is also expected to be experienced in Dhofar Governorate.

Wadis of Wilayat Mahdha in Buraimi Governorate are already running in full strength.

People in the village of Qada, located in the wilayat of Khasab was evacuated and its residents directed to designated shelter places to ensure their safety. Wadi in Bidiya also caused people to be stranded which required rescue operations via helicopter yesterday. A wadi has cut through Sinaw – Mahut road.

The authorities are still continuing with rescue, evacuation and transportation of medical supplies in South Al Batinah Governorate.
